baby basics: carseat and cover

One of the most important purchases you make for your baby is the carseat. Obviously safety is the #1 priority, but style and ease of use are also important considerations since you will be carrying it around EVERYWHERE for the first few months!

I actually picked out my carseat because it was compatible with the stroller I wanted. I went with the Maxi Cosi Mico and absolutely LOVE it. At the time of purchase, I didn’t realize how different it was from most infant carriers – I get comments on it everywhere I go!

The shape allows Eleanor to sit more upright and see what’s going on around her. I also really like the infant insert for her head. It’s enough to help her hold up her head, but it’s not super bulky or restricting. The shape of the handle also makes it really easy to hold or carry in the crook of my arm.

I chose the color because Eleanor was a summer baby. The light color stays cool in the heat and looks fresh. We’ve had a couple of “accidents” while in the carseat and it washes up nicely (throw in wash, air dry, and no stains!). But as much as I love my carseat, it was never easy to keep her shielded from the sun (even with the sun shade up). My sister recommended the Carseat Canopy. I checked hers out when she visited, and I was totally convinced.

It’s a lightweight cover that velcros onto the carseat handle. You just flip it over to shield from rain, wind, sun, etc while baby sits comfortably inside. They have a variety of colors and patterns and the inside is a really soft minky material. The whole thing can just be tossed in the machine to wash up (totally necessary for ALL baby products!)

I chose a neutral color scheme so ours could be used with baby #2 (yes, I’m already thinking about baby #2 haha). It shipped fast and I’ve been using it daily!

There are 3 great uses for the canopy:

1. Bar up and hanging over the carseat to fully block baby from the elements
2. Bar up and folded back to allow me to see Eleanor, but keep her a bit covered up (mostly to keep her sleeping while we’re out and about)
3. Bar down and folded back to completely open up the carseat but still have it available when needed
