halloween headstart + simple toddler costume

First of all, thank you all for the wonderful well wishes last week! It’s still hard to believe that we’re expecting baby #2 let alone that I’m already in my 2nd trimester! Don’t worry, the blog won’t become overrun with bump posts – I’m going to try to keep a healthy balance between pregnancy related and regular content!

Halloween kicked off early for the Murnans this weekend! We started with the Zoo Spooktacular at the Henry Doorly Zoo on Friday evening. Eleanor dressed as a train conductor (complete with a hat that lasted 2 seconds on her head) since she’s ALL about trains these days. I might be biased, but she was pretty darn adorable…

The event had trick-or-treating, live music, princess/super hero meet and greets, and plenty of games.

Eleanor won us some peanut M&M’s for getting the bean bags through the apple (eating your toddler’s candy is a definite mom perk)

She also stopped for a cute photo opp with these cowboys – they were in full character and holding a Wild West show. With a little cowgirl hat, she could have joined them!

On Saturday I whipped up my absolute favorite cupcakes to take to a Roaring 20’s Halloween party. This is a Martha Stewart recipe for s’mores cupcakes and marshmallow frosting. I dyed the fluff green to make them more ghoulish and toasted them with a kitchen torch. I think they turned out pretty cute (and tasty)!

I LOVE themed parties, and everybody looked great! I was pretty proud of myself for finding my WHOLE ensemble in my closet (zero budget Halloween). The last time I wore this dress was to Jeff’s fraternity formal in 2009 – this time it had to stretch around a baby bump ;)

Jeff was looking pretty dapper in his suit too…

There were plenty of great drink options, but since I’m pregnant, I opted to eat one too many rice krispie treat pumpkins along with about half the platter of Hannah’s amazing Vegan 7 Layer Dip (no photo because I literally ate it ALL).

The company at the party was great, but I have to admit that this handsome gentleman may have been my favorite. Bain is one of the host’s new rescue dogs and he’s the absolute sweetest. I like to think he was giving me kisses, but he was probably just checking to see if I had any dip he could lick off my face ;)

Eleanor’s train conductor costume was so easy and affordable, I thought I’d share how we put it together. I love that the overalls can be reused all winter and the hat can be saved for dress up. It was also really comfortable for her to run and play in.

We have some more Halloween fun planned for next weekend, so Eleanor will get another chance to dress up as a ” choo choo” girl :)
