Welcome to the first installment of Living Big with Makingmine! Click here for more on this new series!
Happy Friday friends! I’m so excited to introduce you to Natalie Dayton from Flyover Design Co. I first met Natalie about a year ago while wedding gown shopping with my best friend from high school and got to know her well throughout all of our various bridesmaids duties. She’s smart, opinionated, creative, and has a killer sarcastic sense of humor.
After seeing her talents at work planning the cutest bridal shower ever and lending a hand with wedding reception decor, I was so excited when Natalie (along with her business partner Briana) launched Flyover Design Co. this fall! They specialize in design and original handwritten prints and signage. I immediately put Natalie to work creating a custom chalkboard for me, and I LOVE how it turned out!
It’s awesome to see someone in your circle put themselves out there and pursue their dreams. Seeing what she’s accomplished in just three months is nothing short of inspiring.
Ready to learn more? Here’s a little Q&A with Natalie…
Introduce yourself! How are you LIVING BIG and pursuing your passions?
Hi! I’m Natalie Dayton, co-owner of Flyover Design Co., and I’m honored to be part of the Makingmine ‘Living Big’ series! My partner Briana Wengert and I decided to launch our graphic design and paper goods business after making some signage and paper goods for my wedding. There weren’t many options for local design companies in Des Moines, so we figured why not turn something we love into something others can enjoy—both locally and nationwide!
Where do you find inspiration?
This is going to sound so cliché…but everywhere! Whether it’s creeping my Instagram feed on the couch (can you tell I like Instagram?) or taking in the scenery on a run, there’s always something that could potentially spark a new idea. We’re always looking for fun new places to shoot our products, so something as simple as an old building can be an amazing backdrop for a shoot!
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own business?
If it’s something you’re truly passionate about, go for it! You’d be surprised how supportive your friends and family can be if they know it’s something that is important to you—and don’t be afraid to ask for help! Also, focus your efforts into areas that will pay off for your business.
Social media is a beast, and with only two of us, we knew we couldn’t afford to spend all of our time updating 10 different social media outlets. So, since our company relies on visuals, we narrowed our focus to mainly our Instagram page (@flyoverdesignco) and use that as a driver to our website, Etsy page, and blog.
If you could master one skill you don’t have right now, what would it be?
Dancing—I’m so envious of good dancers! I can keep a beat, but fluidity and rhythm are a different story. When I go to a dance class and watch myself in the mirror, it goes downhill pretttttty fast.
Who has been the biggest influence in your life? Why?
My parents. The two of them have completely different skill sets, and between them, I can always get any question I might have answered.
My mom is the heart of our family—she’s an amazing mother and always knows how to keep everyone happy, and I can only hope I can be that successful with my own family some day. Plus, she helps to keep me grounded when I start to spaz out over work and life.
My dad is super influential on the business side, having started his own successful business that he still continues to run today. Knowing he started his company from the ground up keeps me striving to work harder and push forward with our own business. Both are supportive and push me to do more and be better each and every day.

3 words that best describe you…

Describe your perfect day…
Morning: Wake up, lace up my running shoes and take a long run to clear my head for the day. Then take my pup Calvin for a walk around Raccoon River Park. Have some breakfast (an omelet, perhaps!), check my e-mail, and shower (obviously).
Afternoon: Meet a friend for a fun lunch, then head to a coffee shop to get a bit of work done. Head home to finish up any sign projects on my to-do list (staining wood, painting chalkboards, lettering, etc.).
Evening: Take a bike ride with my husband Max to a nearby brewery for a drink and dinner (all of our bike rides have a food or drink destination included). Head home and catch up on our shows or a movie we haven’t seen yet!

A paper planner — it changes with the year, but right now I’m loving my Rifle Paper Co. planner. I’ll never be able to keep my planner on my phone—paper all the way!
Good tennis shoes — you never know when you might get the urge to go for a run…
My engagement ring — maybe I’m biased, but it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever owned.
