This Spring I started my first job outside the home since the girls were born, and while our weeks look a little different now, overall the change has been great for all of us! My gig is only 15 hours a week, and aside from a couple of mornings where I absolutely must be in the office, I have the freedom to set my own schedule.
It’s super convenient, but over the past few months I’ve come to realize flexibility can be both a blessing and a burden. Today I thought I’d share how I make the most of an inconsistent schedule and embrace an on-the-go life! And yes, plenty of Dunkin’ Donuts® Iced Coffee from Kum & Go® is definitely part of the plan!
Schedule your pillars
This sounds simple, but it’s been harder than I expected. There are always MUST do’s in both my work and mom life:
I MUST get the monthly schedule done for my volunteers.
I also MUST get Eleanor to her dance lesson on time.
But then there are a lot of other things that are important to me that I want to make happen. With no set schedule, work time could really be ANY time, which can easily slip into ALL the time.
I’ve learned to take the same care scheduling zoo trips with the girls as I do on important work tasks. Setting aside dedicated time for both work and mom priorities keeps my weeks from swaying too far in either direction. I’m flexible on when my pillars happen, but not if they happen.
And yes, backyard jungle gym time IS a priority :)
Use transitional pieces
Because my schedule is fluid and changes based on the pillars I identify each week, I switch between “work Joanna” and “mom Joanna” at the drop of a hat. I upgraded my diaper bag to something I feel comfortable carrying as a purse both in and out of the office. I can carry necessities for the girls (diapers) and myself (files, and let’s be honest – snacks) without having to switch up bags depending on where I’m going.
Set “stop” alarms
I’ve talked about this before, but my alarm system is more important than ever! I set alarms on my phone for e v e r y t h i n g. Alarms for getting the girls dressed. Alarms for getting everyone loaded in to the car. Alarms for when it’s time to leave the office. Setting alarms allows me to be fully present in my current task without constantly wondering if it’s time to switch gears.
Bring a boost
Ok, last but not least, my inconsistent schedule definitely messes up morning routine and can leave me downright exhausted. I’ll often pick up a Dunkin’ Donuts Iced Coffee from Kum & Go after my 5am Orangetheory workout and stash it in my bag for when I need an extra boost! My favorite is the Original flavor, and if Jeff is luck, I’ll pick him up a Mocha ;)
Kum & Go also stocks Espresso and French Vanilla flavors, so there’s something for everyone! They’re absolutely delicious and the convenience can’t be beat. And if coffee is vital to your on-the-go lifestyle (raising my hand here), you should definitely check out Kum and Go’s rewards program!
Starting a new job has been so fulfilling to me personally, and even though any change can be difficult, it’s been well worth it! I’d love to hear your suggestions for managing an inconsistent schedule – send me your ideas!
