Jeff and I have always traveled over the holidays to visit family both near and far. This year it isn’t just about the two of us, and having a baby really changes everything!
Eleanor generally does very well on road-trips, but I try my best to plan ahead to make our travels as smooth a possible. The holidays are hectic enough without any added stress of baby (or mommy) meltdowns! I want to make Eleanor’s 1st Christmas the very best, so here are my 3 tips for a fuss-free holiday!
3 fuss-free tips for traveling with a baby
1. Recreate the comforts of home
Eleanor is used to falling asleep in my arms, so it can be difficult to get her settled down for naps in the car. After enough practice, I’ve found ways to give her the next best thing. I wrap my hand and forearm across her body and on her cheek. She feels my skin against her and immediately settles into her familiar pattern.
We also make sure to pack her crib sheet from home to make transitioning to her pack ‘n play a little easier and give her a small transition object to hang on to. Find what works for you and stick with it! A fuss-free bedtime routine is worth the trouble!
2. Never underestimate the essentials
For us that means diapers! We’ve used Pampers Swaddlers with Eleanor since the day she was born. The wetness indicator makes it SO easy to tell when she needs a change, and we’ve managed to make it to 6 months with no major blowouts. Swaddlers are the softest diapers out there and do a great job of keeping Eleanor dry overnight! Leaks and rashes are the last thing I want to worry about on the road, so Pampers hold a place of honor when we load up the car! Fuss-free diaper changes are a beautiful thing ;)
If you don’t plan ahead, plan on CVS. More than once I’ve found myself using the last diaper or finishing off the wipes at the most inconvenient time. I’ve had to send Jeff out to CVS for an emergency Pampers refill. No matter how great I think I am at estimating what to pack, I’m always a bit off. CVS makes getting exactly what we need fast, convenient and fuss-free. Plus while he’s there, he’s also able to pick up the shampoo or toothbrush I forgot and find a last-minute card for an unexpected relative.
3. Allow a flexible timeline
As I said earlier in this post, this year our holiday travels aren’t just about us, and Eleanor is great at reminding me that I am no longer in control. We used to power through an 8 hour trip with one stop. That definitely won’t be happening this year!
Your timeline is going to get shifted around, and it’s best to mentally prepare yourself ahead of time. Try to plan your departure when baby is sleepiest (for us that’s 5 am), and give yourself wiggle room on your time of arrival – your family will “ooo” and “ahh” over your little one no matter what time you arrive! Letting go of a strict timeline will ensure a fuss-free visit!
