Creating your Halloween treat bag lanterns
Your first step will be determining what shape you want on your bag. I chose a bat and pumpkin for my bags. I used paper to trace the shapes onto my bags with pen before cutting them out. Be sure to position your cutouts closer to the top of the bag, so when your light sits on top of the candy, it can shine through.
So once you’ve traced and cut, you’ll move on to the “stained glass” portion. Simply take a piece of clear contact paper and cover it with ripped up pieces of tissue paper. I used a couple of different colors for each shape to add a bit of interest. Since the bat and pumpkin weren’t particularly large, I found that the smaller I tore the tissue paper, the better.
Once you get your tissue paper positioned correctly, sandwich it between another piece of contact paper. This will keep the inside of your bag from being sticky while also preventing any tears.
Then simply position it behind your cutout and tape it inside the bag!
If you haven’t already, now is the time to print off your “You’ve been BOO’d” card! This is the card that will accompany your treat bag lantern to let the lucky recipient know how to BOO it Forward!
Finishing your Halloween treat bag lanterns
Now all that’s left is filling up your bag with delicious treats like Starburst® Fun Size, TWIX® Fun Size, SNICKERS® Fun Size, MILKY WAY® Fun Size, and 3 MUSKETEERS® Fun Size! I also added some American Greetings pumpkin stickers to my bags. Don’t forget to top it off with your flameless tea light to give your lantern that extra shine!
Now you’re all ready to give someone the friendliest BOO in the neighborhood! I recommend delivering these at dusk to really maximize the whole lantern effect ;)
We picked up our MARS® Candy for our BOO lanterns at Walmart. There is a HUGE selection, but we went with this assorted mix of classic favorites.
The good news is, you can get all kinds of other shopping done while you’re stocking up on Halloween essentials. Keep an eye out for special Spider-Man bags this season in addition to mummy bags, and get the Spider-Man Homecoming DVD & Blue-Ray on October 17th at Walmart.
Happy BOOing!
I hope you are all as excited for Halloween as I am! Let me know if you give these DIY Halloween Treat Bag Lanterns a try!
